HUDSON — Residents of two apartments are homeless after fire broke out early Friday morning in Bliss Towers, Hudson fire chief Anthony Demarco said.

The fire began in the kitchen in apartment 508 and began to spread quickly, Demarco said.

At about 12:05 a.m., Columbia County 911 sent Hudson Fire Department to Bliss Towers, at 41 N. 2nd St., after receiving numerous reports of a fire on the 5th floor.

When Hudson firefighters arrived, they immediately requested mutual-aid assistance from neighboring fire companies.

Residents of the 5th floor were evacuated from the building.

A woman, who was a resident of a different apartment on the 5th floor, was taken to Columbia Memorial Health by Greenport Rescue Squad, for treatment of smoke inhalation, Demarco said.

The smoke from the affected apartment filled the hallway on the 5th floor. When firefighters entered apartment 508, they found the fire spreading up the walls and into the ceiling of the kitchen, Demarco said.

Crews were able to stop the fire, before it spread to any other rooms. The kitchen received extensive fire damage, with smoke damage throughout the apartment, Demarco said.

Apartment 408, directly below the fire, received extensive water damage. Residents of both those apartments will be staying with relatives until repairs can be made, Demarco said.

The fire was declared out after 20 minutes. Firefighters then began to check to make sure it had not spread any further, and began ventilating the floor.

The fire began in a pot of oil on the stove, Demarco said.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters.

Greenport and Catskill fire companies assisted Hudson at the fire scene.

Fire companies that were placed on stand-by included Chatham, Claverack, Stottville, Germantown and Athens.

Assisting at the scene were: Greenport Rescue Squad, Hudson Police and the Columbia County Fire Coordinator’s Office.

All fire companies were back in service at 1:15 a.m.
