GREENPORT — A dump truck pulling a trailer with paving equipment overturned on Route 9G in the town Thursday morning, Police Chief Kevin Marchetto said.

The dump truck, owned by S.M.S. Paving & Excavation of Hudson, was traveling south on Route 9G, when a car pulled out of Mt. Merino Road to go south, Marchetto said. The accident happened at about 8:36 a.m. on Route 9G, just south of Mt. Merino Road.

The truck driver told police he had to choose between hitting the car or hitting the guardrail and chose the guardrail, Marchetto said.

The trailer jackknifed in the crash and the truck damaged about 250 feet of guardrail, Marchetto said.

Police did not identify the truck driver, 30, who is from Hudson, or the man driving the car, 86, who is from Greenport. No tickets were issued in the accident, Marchetto said.

About three miles of Route 9G was closed for 90 minutes, Marchetto said. No injuries were reported. The road was reopened at about 10:30 a.m.

A large tow truck was brought in to get the truck and trailer back up on the pavement, Marchetto said. The truck had to be towed from the scene.
