CLAVERACK — A one-car accident Tuesday night knocked out power and closed part of Route 66 for 11 hours.

At about 9:59 p.m., Columbia County 911 sent Claverack and Mellenville fire departments and Greenport Rescue Squad to Route 66, east of Stottville Road, for a one-car accident.

A car driven by David Kukin, 31, of Brooklyn, struck a utility pole, which brought the pole and live wires down in the road, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Louis Bray said Wednesday.

Kukin got out of the vehicle on his own, Bray said. He was examined by paramedics from Greenport Rescue Squad on the scene.

About 175 National Grid customers in Claverack, Greenport and Ghent lost power after the crash, National Grid media representative Patrick Stella said Wednesday.

Power was restored to all households by 4:20 a.m., Stella said.

Route 66, between Stottville Road and Route 9H, remained closed until 9 a.m., while other utilities attached their cables to the new pole, Stella said.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
