CANAAN — Two people were taken to area hospitals following a one-car accident on Friday night in Canaan.

The car was traveling south on Route 22 south of Queechy Lake Drive, when the unidentified driver veered off the right side of the road.

The car struck a guardrail, went over it and rolled down a steep embankment, coming to rest after striking a tree, police said.

The crash occurred at about 8:31 p.m.

Canaan Fire Company and two ambulances from Chatham Rescue Squad were sent by Columbia County 911 to the scene.

One of the car’s occupants was taken to Albany Medical Center. The other was taken to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, police said.

Part of Route 22 was closed while crews worked. The car was towed from the scene.

State police investigated. They were assisted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Red Rock Fire Department was placed on stand-by, but were not needed.

All firefighters were back in service at 10:10 p.m.
