VALATIE — A 15-year-old boy was taken to Albany Medical Center by Valatie Rescue Squad on Wednesday evening after a swimming accident in the village, Capt. John DeRocha of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said.

The boy, who is from East Greenbush, broke his ankle while swimming in Kinderhook Creek, DeRocha said.

The teen, whose name has not been released, told firefighters he did not know the water he was jumping into was so shallow, DeRocha said.

Valatie Fire and Rescue were sent by Columbia County 911 to Main Street in the area of the waterfalls at about 5:45 p.m. Valatie fire officials requested assistance from Niverville firefighters in rescuing the boy, who was located in the creek, about 60 feet down from the road, Valatie First Assistant Chief Joseph H. Loeffler said.

Firefighters were able to get the boy out of the water in about 15 minutes and up the cliff to a waiting ambulance in just under a half hour, Loeffler said.

Main Street was closed between Chatham Street and New Street while crews worked.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office assisted on the scene.

“It seems many people from out of the area are coming to Columbia County to use our swimming holes,” DeRocha said.
