GREENPORT — Applebee’s in Greenport will be closing, according to T.L. Cannon Companies, the franchisee for the restaurant.

“The Applebee’s restaurant at 420 Fairview Ave. in Hudson NY will permanently close as of Sunday, May 19,” a spokesperson from the company said in a statement. “We greatly appreciate our neighbors’ patronage for the past 15 years and have loved being a part of this neighborhood.”

Employees at the Greenport location were offered jobs at other nearby Applebee’s locations, according to the statement.

The Fairview Ave. Applebee’s location officially opened 15 years ago on March 30, 2009.

John Peyton, chief executive officer of the restaurant company Dine Brands, said in a 2023 earnings call that the company planned to execute a three-part plan to develop the company.

Parts of the plan included looking at underperforming restaurants and finding ways to improve profitability, which led to the closure of some restaurants, Peyton said.

“First, we’ve taken a fresh look at underperforming restaurants and ways in which we can improve profitability, leading to some additional closures,” Peyton said in the 2023 call.

The closures of those restaurants were based on a number of factors, including closing older restaurants, or closing locations that were in areas becoming unsustainable due to changes in the industry’s landscape following the pandemic.

“We’ve taken a closer look at underperforming restaurants as the new Applebee’s development and leadership team continues to refine its prototype and work on relocating the remaining restaurants impacted by local market changes,” said Dine Brands CFO Vance Chang during the earnings call. “As results we’re now expecting 25 to 35 net fewer Applebee’s locations in 2023, down from 10 to 20 net fewer locations previously expected.
