Vassar’s Palmer Gallery to Host Exhibition of Digital Art Created by College Web Designer Chris Silverman
POUGHKEEPSIE – An exhibition of works by Vassar Senior Web Designer Chris Silverman will be on display at the College’s Palmer Gallery from September 30 to October 15. Images in the show, Till the Bridge You Will Need Be Formed, were created in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop using customized brushes. The exhibition, beginning with a reception from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. on September 30, is open to the public. The Palmer Gallery is located in the College Center in Vassar’s Main Building.
Silverman is a Hudson Valley artist, designer, and illustrator whose work has been featured by The Chicago Tribune, Vogue, Net Magazine, and Planned Parenthood. Silverman describes the works in the show, created between 2015 and 2021, as “an exhibition of digital artworks exploring the intersection of order and chaos through themes of technology, faces, machinery, symmetry, and abstract designs.”
The title of the show is drawn from one of Silverman’s favorite poems, Walt Whitman’s “A Noiseless Patient Spider,” in which Whitman describes a spider perched on a branch in the middle of a vast, open space, releasing strands of spiderweb into the air in hopes of having each one catch somewhere. “Whitman sees a parallel to how he lives his life, constantly exploring new ideas, trying to make connections, and attempting to piece together what he’s learned, and that’s more or less how I work,” Silverman said.
“I’m fascinated by duality: the tension between order and disorder, precision and chaos, mechanical rigidity and organic flow,” he said. “My professional work as a website designer exists at the cross-section of both—it is a field where engineering is inextricably combined with art.”
Attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination or evidence of a negative PCR COVID-19 test taken within three days of the event or a negative rapid antigen test the day of the event.
