They Had 3D in the 19th Century?
RIDERS MILLS — Join Riders Mills Historical Association and Stuart Lehman on August 13th at the Riders Mills Schoolhouse at 1 p.m. for a presentation entitled, The World in Your Parlor, The Stereoscope and 19th Century Virtual Reality.
In the 19th Century, the new art of photography changed how people saw the world. Long, dangerous, and expensive journeys were no longer the only way to learn about faraway lands. Photography could take you there. At the same time, another concept was being developed, what we know today as “3D”. These new technologies created an “immersive experience” that even families of modest means could enjoy. The stereoscope, with its photographic view cards, would introduce people to the scenery from around the world. It would bring historical events into the home and record significant places in many local communities. Join us for a hands-on presentation as we explore this popular pastime!
Stuart W. Lehman works with the Office of General Services as an Assistant Curator for the New York State Capitol. Previously he worked with the New York State Bureau of Historic Sites at Senate House, Herkimer Home, and Schuyler Mansion. He lives in Guilderland.
