The Opening Reception and visits to the Walt Meade Gallery are always free, open to all and COVID-19 protocols will be followed for the safety of guests. “We have long admired Destiny’s work, voice as an artist, and her message as member of humanity,” says Grants & Community Coordinator Samantha Nick. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to present her work in our community as we commemorate Juneteenth.”

By Hand was created with years of research and is in response to the personal history of the artist’s enslaved ancestors and freedom in South Carolina. By Hand is the third iteration of works exploring this topic, the first being Gained and Gathered and the second being Clenched. The artist uses specific materials to allude, point to or center to various subject matters. For instance, through her use of vintage textiles, Palmer highlights the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the labor of the working class in America.

“By Hand” opens Saturday June 19, 2021 from 4:00p to 6:00p. Masks and social distancing will be required for in person events and other COVID-19 guidelines which are detailed on the Roxbury Arts Group website.
