SUNY Ulster Upcoming Music Events for February

STONE RIDGE — The SUNY Ulster Music Department will be hosting two concerts for February. The performances will be held in the Quimby Theater in Vanderlyn Hall on the Stone Ridge campus.

SUNY Ulster Band Festival

The Band Festival will be held February 11, at 7:30 p.m. Local high school bands combine with the SUNY Ulster Wind Ensemble to provide an evening of beautiful music led by guest conductor Paula Holcomb.

As director of bands at SUNY Fredonia, Dr. Holcomb oversees an extensive band program consisting of four concert bands. She is highly sought after as an adjudicator and guest conductor, and has conducted bands and orchestras in 39 states, South America, Australia, Mexico, Europe, and Canada. Recently, she was presented with the A. Frank Miller award from Kappa Kappa Psi, served on the Council and Artistic Planning Conference Committee for the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, as well as serving on the board of the Conductors Guild.

Herrington Benefit Concert

The annual concert will be held on Wednesday, February 26, at 7:30 p.m. Musicians from SUNY Ulster along with local ensembles performing in memory of the college’s former band director, Lee Herrington, to raise money for music scholarships.

The Lee Herrington Memorial Scholarship was created in honor of Lee Herrington, a dedicated musician and mentor, who was the former band director of SUNY Ulster, a longtime Rondout Valley music teacher, and the former director of the Kingston local American Federation of Musicians Concert Band.

The Lee Herrington Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. and is funded by donations made at the concert. This

scholarship is given to an entering or returning student who is involved with the Music program and has participated in SUNY Ulster music or choral groups. The 2019-20 recipient was Bradley Westervelt, a second year College Scholar at SUNY Ulster.
