SAUGERTIES PRO MUSICA Cello & Guitar Concert 2/16

SAUGERTIES — Saugerties Pro Musica is happy to have cellist Rebecca Hartka return to our series with her new collaborator - Jose Lezcano, guitar, on February 16th to perform a program that includes composers from Spain, Brazil, France and Argentina, and also features a composition by each performer. Hartka wrote “Bone Dust Star Dust” after improvising with her cello on a remote Mayan pyramid. The work uses scales found in ancient Mayan flutes as well as sounds of her Celtic

ancestors. Lezcano’s Key West Suite draws from a wide range of styles from Bolero and Bach. Their program titled: “Cultural Cross Currents”,

explores music that has resulted from the intersection of cultures and styles - from Samba to Tango.

Rebecca Hartka, cello, grew up with Ecuadorian neighbors dancing to traditional Andean panpipes and drums, which Inspired a lifelong interest in building bridges between cultures through music.

Cuban American Jose Lezcano has been writing and exploring hybridized music for decades in performance and in his compositions. The two have been playing together since 2014, connecting across cultures in Cuba at the international Cello Festival of Havana and with Mayan musicians in Yucatan Mexico.

Free refreshments and a “meet the performers” reception follow the concert.
