Saturday Kids’ Workshop with Jacks by Mel Kendrick

GHENT — Saturday Kids’ Workshop with Jacks by Mel Kendrick Jan. 9th Kids’ Workshop.

This Saturday, we will visit Jack -2 by Mel Kendrick. This monumental concrete sculpture invites us to think about positive and negative space, opposites, contrast, and texture. To make this piece, Kendrick used hot-wire techniques to carve large chunks of Styrofoam. Molds were made for each section and filled with alternating black and white layers of concrete. When stacked, the top section looks like a playing piece used in the children’s game of Jacks. After exploring Jack -2 inside and out, kids will use black and white paper along with black and white markers to create a layered composition of contrasting shapes and patterns.

All workshops require pre-registration. Ages 5-12 (children MUST be 5 years old to attend).

Workshops are limited to 12 participants with a minimum of two teachers. Children will be divided into two or three groups with a maximum child:teacher ratio of 6:1.

Masks, social distancing, and hand washing/sanitizing protocols will be in effect.
