Ghent Playhouse Presents the Award-Winning Sci-Fi Crime Drama
GHENT — The Ghent Playhouse closes its successful 2022-23 season with a haunting thriller set in the year 2050. “‘The Nether’ follows an investigation into the morality of identity in the digital world, and explores the unanticipated effects of making dreams a reality. Written by Jennifer Haley and directed by Patrick White, the play runs June 2-18 at 6 Town Place in Ghent, NY. Tickets can be purchased at GhentPlayhouse.org.
“As the audience watching this play, we are asked, ‘What are the implications of living in a technological age?’” said Artistic Director, Cathy Lee-Visscher. “We are confronted with an increasingly relevant question of our time: Do all human actions, even those taken online, have real consequences?”

The Ghent Playhouse cast is as follows:
George Filieau portrays Simms (Papa), a successful businessman and creator of The Hideaway, a realm within the Nether. He returns to the Ghent Playhouse stage after his last appearance in “The Chalk Garden.”
Last seen in “A View From the Bridge” at the Ghent Playhouse, Amy Hausknecht portrays Morris, a detective investigating the disturbing brand of entertainment within the Nether.
Neal Berntson returns to The Ghent after a long absence, to play Doyle, a middle-school science teacher, who has lost all perspective and frequents The Hideaway to escape reality.
Ghent Playhouse newcomers, Aidan White and Aaliyah Al-Fuhaid, portray Woodnut, a well-mannered young man, conflicted in his feelings about The Hideaway, and Iris, a virtual image of a virginal, yet strangely seductive young girl.
“The Nether” runs for three consecutive weeks: June 2-18, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday matinee at 2:00pm. Tickets are available online only: $23 for members, $28 for nonmembers, and $12 for students. Tickets and memberships can be purchased at GhentPlayhouse.org with no additional processing fees.
Playwright Jennifer Haley’s work delves into ethics in virtual reality and the impact of technology on human relationships, identity, and desire. Winner of the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, “The Nether” premiered in 2013.
