Therapy dog visits Ghent Assisted Living

Photo by Pam PriceResidents and the heroic nursing home staff at Ghent Assisted Living (formerly Whittier) facility had a brighter day as spirits were lifted by a recent therapy dog visit. Fran Martino and her therapy dog, Silvana (Silvie for short), walked outside around the perimeter of the building so folks could meet Silvie through their windows. “It was so nice to see their faces light up with smiles when Silvie came by their windows,” said Martino. Silvana was rescued from Puerto Rico by Peppertree Rescue and adopted by Martino in January 2020. “The rescue group named her Silvana, which is a popular woman’s name in Italy meaning ‘Woman of the Woods.’ How appropriate for an environmental educator like me,” Martino said. Silvie passed her therapy dog test with Therapy Dogs International, and looks forward to being Martino’s partner working with children on school field trips, summer camps and canoe trips when COVID-19 protocols allow.
