BUFFALO — Just in time for healthcare professionals as they prepare to help their patients conquer New Year’s resolutions, the New York State Smokers’ Quitline (Quitline) will host two upcoming webinars on best practices for treating tobacco dependence. Registration for both events is free and available at the Quitline’s Online News Room, nysmokefree.com/newsroom.

The Quitline will present “Introducing Tobacco Cessation into Your Practice” noon-1 p.m. Nov. 30 via WebEx. The webinar’s featured presenter is Anne Lawton, RN, NCTTP, a community outreach nurse for the Cancer Care Centers with St. Peter’s Health Partners in Albany. Lawton’s presentation is especially geared toward nurses and covers different types of tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy as well as teachable moments while working with patients and families on tobacco cessation.

The Quitline will present “Youth and Young Adult Tobacco Cessation in a Clinical Setting” noon-1 p.m. Dec. 8 via WebEx. The webinar’s featured presenters include Rachel Boykan, MD, FAAP, a pediatric hospitalist at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Julie Gorzkowski, MSW, LSW, director of adolescent health promotion for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The presenters will discuss the importance of addressing youth and young adult tobacco cessation in a clinical setting and offer ways to implement strategies from the AAP’s new resource – Youth Tobacco Cessation: Considerations for Clinicians.

Each webinar additionally includes instructions for healthcare professionals about how to refer their tobacco-using patients to the Quitline as an extension of care. The webinars will be recorded and posted to the Quitline’s website and YouTube page for future viewing.

Lawton and Boykan serve on the Quitline’s Healthcare Professional Task Force, a group of statewide experts who help inform the Quitline’s marketing and outreach efforts. All webinar attendees will receive an offer for a free Patient Treatment Kit via mail, which includes a supply of the Quitline’s latest marketing materials.
