Hudson River Historic Boat member completes training

Contributed photoMargaret Howell, pictured, a member of the Hudson River Historic Boat Restoration & Sailing Society (aka Hudson River HIstoric Boat) has completed a hands on course, Keel Boat Sailing. The seven week course was offered by the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston. Although Howell grew to appreciate the beauty of the Hudson River from early experiences with her family on a motor boat, being an adventurous person, Howell was drawn to the challenges and adventures that sailing provides. Searching for opportunities to sail, Howell learned about the Hudson River Historic Boat’s Eleanor and opportunities to sail, and joined the Hudson River Historic Boat. Howell began to sail this season on Eleanor as an observer and crew person. She realized she wanted to, and needed to learn more about how to sail, and signed up for the Keel Boat Sailing Class. Through her first season of sailing, Howell learned that there are opportunities for everyone to sail, with or without your own sailboat. Being available at a moment’s notice, willing to learn and being a team member are three components of sailing without boat ownership. Howell, after completing the Keel Boat Course in Kingston, signed on with a father and daughter as part of their race team, and handles the spinnaker sail. Membership to the Hudson River HIstoric Boar is open to every person who seeks the adventure of sailing, or the desire to learn how to sail. If you are a sailor now, or would like to learn to sail, send an email to info or visit Individual memberships are $20. Family Memberships are $40. Junior Memberships are $10. Contributions are always needed to maintain Eleanor, the sailboat. Mail to HRHB, 191 State Route 23 B, Stop 13, Hudson, New York 12534.
