AUSTERLITZ — The Austerlitz Historical Society will open a Holiday Shop to benefit Old Austerlitz noon-4 p.m. Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. “It’s been an unusual year, and so many of our events had to be cancelled, but we wanted to do something to celebrate the holidays,” said, Jeffrey Harris, President of the Society. The shop will have Christmas and Hanukah items (including gelt, the traditional chocolate coins), as well as art, antiques, vintage items, stocking-stuffer toys for children, and jewelry.
“Like so many non-profits, it’s been a bit of a struggle to raise funds this year, but I have been amazed at the generosity of our members and friends. I am truly thankful for the support we have received this year,” said Harris. The Society, which owns and operates Old Austerlitz, was able to open the site in late summer and managed to facilitate hundreds of visitors safely during the pandemic. It also opened new exhibits and an art gallery featuring contemporary artists from the region during the summer.
To keep people connected during this holiday season, the society’s online newsletter News from Old Austerlitz, will include holiday stories from the past—featuring interesting historical tidbits from the area, as well as holiday crafts and recipes. You can sign-up for the newsletter at www.oldausterlitz.org
Old Austerlitz is located in the hamlet of Austerlitz at 11550 Route 22.
