HUDSON — The Columbia County Board of Supervisors announced that the Shopping Shuttle route will be extended until 6 p.m. starting March 30. The public transportation bus runs through Hudson and Greenport, connecting residents to locations for shopping, medical providers, government services and employment.
The Shopping Shuttle currently runs from 6:45 a.m.-3 p.m. Starting March 30, the Shopping Shuttle will run from 6:45 a.m.-6 p.m. The hours are being extended as a trial run that will last from March 30 to June 26. If the trial run has significant ridership, the extended hours will be continued on a long-term basis.
Public Transportation serves an important workforce development purpose. The 2017 Columbia County Public Transportation Plan identified the need to extend public transportation hours, especially for residents who use public transportation to get to and from work.
“The Public Transportation Committee came to the realization that many who worked could not avail themselves to the shopping shuttle due to the hours of operation. Hopefully the extended hours will enable more people to us the shopping shuttle”, said Chairman Matt Murell.
“The expansion of the Shopping Shuttle route is a direct result of our committee listening to our ridership, understanding the need and agreeing to a trial run of the service. I’m confident the need is there!” said Transportation Committee Chairman and Supervisor Richard Scalera.
“Public transportation contributes to economic development, public health, and quality of life,” says Supervisor Michael Chameides. “I’m excited to be working with Chairman Murell and Supervisor Scalera to improve public transportation.”
The cost of riding the Shopping Shuttle is $1. The Shopping Shuttle is one of several routes that Columbia County provides to residents. Dial-a-ride services are also available for seniors, veterans, and people needing medical transportation. Columbia County’s Public Transportation service is partially funded through New York State and Federal Grants.
