KINDERHOOK — The arrival of spring marks the return of “Drive Through History,” a series of free, self-guided road trips published by the Columbia County Historical Society (CCHS).

First launched in summer of 2020 in response to COVID-19 safety precautions, the road trips highlight a wide range of historic themes and sites throughout Columbia County.

The itineraries can be viewed and downloaded at cchsny.org/drive-through-history.

The first itinerary of the 2021 season is ‘Lights, Camera, Road Trip,’ which explores historic movie moments in Columbia County.

Stops include the 1737 Luykas Van Alen House (a filming location of Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence); the Elizaville Diner and West Taghkanic Diner (where Jim Jarmusch filmed The Dead Don’t Die); as well as multiple stops in Hudson, Claverack, Chatham and New Lebanon.

“Whether you were born here and your family has roots in Columbia County, have recently relocated here, are spending more time here, or just visiting the area, these road trips entertain and educate us about our multifaceted heritage and culture in a fun and free way,” said CCHS Executive Director Lori Yarotsky.

The 2021 road trips debut with two options for users: an interactive, map-based platform that can be viewed on desktop or mobile browsers, and downloadable itineraries which users can print and bring with them on the road.

In addition to ‘Lights, Camera, Road Trip,’ users can also explore the seven existing itineraries published by CCHS in 2020:

‘Legends & Folklore’; ‘Sacred Spaces’ Part I and II; ‘Artifacts of Industry’; ‘Patriots & Patroons: Politics in Columbia County’; ‘Good Apples’; ‘Schoolhouse Stories.’

CCHS plans to release new Drive Through History road trips throughout the spring, summer and fall of 2021.
