ALBANY — Philip Calderone, CEO of the Albany County Airport Authority announced that the Albany International Airport will become the first commercial venue in New York state to sell diagnostic COVID-19 testing kits to the general public. The sale of the saliva-based test kits will be administered by staff from Quadrant Biosciences of Syracuse.

The test kit was created by Quadrant Biosciences working in conjunction with SUNY Upstate Medical University. The test has been ranked the number one saliva-based test by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been cited by the FDA as being among the most sensitive tests regardless of type, ranking 6th worldwide in detecting the virus. The test kits have been widely used throughout State University campuses in New York State. The test kits have also been made available for sale to air travelers at Albany International Airport.

The Albany International Airport launched a COVID-19 testing program for Airport workers in December of 2020 and was the first airport in New York State to offer low-cost and time-sensitive testing to air travelers beginning in January of 2021.

“We are proud to partner with Upstate Medical University and Quadrant Biosciences to make this rapid and efficient COVID-19 test available to the general public,” said Calderone. “The accurate testing for the COVID-19 virus is an essential component in the worldwide effort to identify those that have become infected and direct them to treatment.”

“We are excited to work with the Albany International Airport to offer the Clarifi COVID-19 saliva-based, PCR test to travelers and the general public,” said Richard Uhlig, Founder and CEO of Quadrant Biosciences.

“Airports such as Albany International are major thoroughfares for people traveling across the country and are, thus, uniquely positioned to help stem the spread of COVID-19. This test is well suited for anyone suspected of having close contact with an infected individual — even if that individual didn’t exhibit symptoms at the time of contact.”

Upstate Medical University President Dr. Mantosh Dewan said, “Upstate is extremely proud to play a significant role in this game-changing project. By making our No. 1 rated saliva test available to the public, Quadrant Biosciences and Albany International Airport are helping travelers, individuals and families stay safe and protect their communities, which was our intention all along. This development has been a long time in the making and further illustrates Upstate’s dedication to ending this pandemic and protecting as many people as possible with our enduring commitment to research, education and health.”

Members of the General public may purchase testing kits at the Airport’s testing office located on the first level of the terminal in baggage claim. The price of the test is $65 which includes packaging and shipping. Payment can be made by credit card or debit card. Tests may be taken at home or self-administered while traveling and later dropped off at any UPS drop off location. Free 30-minute parking is available in the Airport’s Short-Term parking lot for those individuals and families planning to purchase test kits.
