Village of Kinderhook, Samascott Orchards make minor adjustment for land purchase

KINDERHOOK — The village of Kinderhook and Samascott Orchards have made adjustments to the proposed purchase deal that will give the village land from the orchard.

The village is acquiring land from Samascott for the development of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Albany-Hudson Electric Trail, of which 1.2 miles will pass through village lines.

“Initially, they were only going to take 25 feet for the width of the trail,” Kinderhook Mayor James C. Dunham said. “But they now need 40 feet.”

Samascott did not want to give up 40 feet of land. The family was concerned about fences along the property. The fences were installed to keep deer away, Dunham said.

“We revised the 25-foot strip, met the minimum design standards and minimized the angle points in the fence,” Dunham said.

With the adjustments, the village and Samascott reached an agreement on the property.

The new adjustments were drawn into the plan and submitted to Greenway. “I’m 99 percent sure they will OK it,” Dunham said.

“I was always supportive of the trail coming to Kinderhook,” said Jake Samascott, owner and operator of Samascott Orchards. “We are excited to help anyway we can.”

But Samascott questioned the amount of land the Greenway is asking to purchase.

“Originally, it was agreed for 25 feet, but now they are asking for 40,” Samascott said.

The width would flare out on a turn in the trail, but Samascott said he wants to keep the majority of the trail at 25 feet wide.

Samascott has a deer fence in place to protect his orchards. The fence will be adjusted during the development of the trail.

“As long as it’s not a 40-foot strip along the whole lane,” Samascott said. “I talked with them [Greenway]. It’s more where we want to be.”

Once the village formally acquires the land from Samascott, construction will be planned for spring 2019. The Greenway will compensate the village for purchasing the land and for any future fees. The village will be compensated $12,000, $6,000 of which to cover the purchase from Samascott, Dunham said. The village could be reimbursed as early as 2019.

The Albany-Hudson Electric Trail is part of the Empire State Trail, a 750-mile biking trail under construction with a completion goal of 2020. The Albany-Hudson Electric Trail will connect the Capital Region and the Hudson Valley.
