Varmall remains active, fights again Saturday

CATSKILL — Catskill boxer Alvin Varmall Jr. is making good on his vow to keep busy in the ring. The cruiserweight contender is back in action on Saturday night at the Claridge Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City.

Varmall (12-0-1, 10 KOs) will be fighting for the third time in as many months when he takes on Boston, Mass. native Tracey Johnson (4-5-4, 0 KOs) in a scheduled six-round bout on the undercard of the Thomas ‘Cornflake’ Lamanna vs. George Sosa bout.

After taking nearly a year off, The 25 year-old Varmall returned in June to earn a first-round TKO victory over Juan Reyna in Philadelphia, then a month later, earned another TKO victory, stopping Eric George in the second round in Charlotte, NC.

Johnson, 31, is the brother of WBA junior middleweight champion Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade and comes into Saturday’s fight having lost three in a row. In his last bout on Nov. 26, he dropped a unanimous decision to Kennedy Katende, who was making his pro debut.

Johnson, a southpaw, hasn’t tasted victory since June 2016 when he earned a four-round split decision victory over Cashton Young at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center in Las Vegas.

Varmall and Johnson have one common opponent, D’Quan Morgan. Varmall defeated Morgan in a four-round unanimous decision in March 2016, while Johnson fought to a majority draw with Morgan in Dec. 2011.
