Titans blanked by Blackbirds; Mustangs fall
VOORHEESVILLE -- Voorheesville kept Taconic Hills out of the win column with a 13-0 victory over the Titans in Saturday's Class C South Division game.
After a scoreless first half, the Blackbirds got on the board in the third quarter when quarterback Ian Owens fired a 55-yard touchdown pass to Vinnie Patterson on a third and long play. Joe Tomlin's point after kick made it 7-0.
Voorheesville's defense came up big later in the quarter when tackle Jimmy Gravino returned a fumble 25 yards for an insurance score.
Taconic Hills was limited to 74 yards of total offense with Dusty Snyder and Donavan Mier each picking up 24 yards on the ground. O'Connell connected on 2 of 7 passes for 15 yards with an interception. Devon Charron had one reception for 12 yards and Shane Bradway one for five yards.
Defensively, O'Connell had four tackles and a fumble recovery, Aiden Flaum three solos and five assists, Bradway three solos and five assists, Charron three solos and a interception returned 65 yards, Smith five solos, two assists, two sacks and a pass breakup, and Mier five solos and four assists.
The Titans (0-2) host Watervliet in their home opener on Friday at 7 p.m.
Helderberg Valley 46, Catskill/Cairo-Durham 12
DUANESBURG -- Helderberg Valley built a 19-0 lead after one quarter of play and went on to hand Catskill-Cairo-Durham a 46-12 loss on Saturday.
Helderberg Valley quarterback Alex Monroe completed 9 or 12 passes, with four of the completions going for touchdowns. He finished with 125 yards passing.
Jake Stahl was Monroe's favorite target, snagging four receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
Jake Hall tossed two touchdown passes for Catskill/Cairo-Durham.
The Mustangs (1-1) travel to Walton of Section IV on Friday at 7 p.m.
MHAL FIELD HOCKEY
Kingston 2, Taconic Hills 0
KINGSTON -- Taconic Hills searches for its first win in the MHAL after falling to Kingston 2-0 on Saturday in varsity field hockey action.
"Definitely a tough game against a very skilled 'A' school, but we held our own," TH coach Angela Webster said. "We did break through their defense several times and held them scoreless the entire second half. We went out the second half with better positioning, which helped us maintain possession more than the first half. Our goalie, Sydney Kiernan, did a great job with her angles and blocking their aerial shots."
Kingston outshot TH 10-1 and held a 12-2 edge in penalty corners. In the net, Sydney Kiernan had seven saves.
Taconic Hills falls to 0-2 on the season.
PATROON GIRLS SOCCER
Maple Hill 5, Cairo-Durham 1
CASTLETON -- Maple Hill scored twice in the first half and three more times in the second to hand Cairo-Durham a 5-1 loss on Friday in Patroon Conference varsity girls soccer.
Mariella Hirschoff led the Lady Wildcats with two goals. Alayna Fletcher had a goal and two assists, Alexis Tedford a goal and an assist, and Paige Padilla a goal. In the net, Hannah Brewer picked up three saves on six shots.
For Cairo-Durham, Nicole Flaherty prevented the shutout with a second half score. Amber Powell had two saves on six shots and Noelle Amoroso four on 12 shots for the Lady Mustangs.
NONLEAGUE GIRLS SOCCER
Taconic Hills 3, Berlin 2
NEW LEBANON -- Taconic Hills gutted out a 3-2 victory over Berlin during the New Lebanon varsity girls soccer tournament consolation game on Saturday.
Julianna Carrasquillo scored a buzzer-beater in the first half off of an assist from Chandler Hoose to get TH started. Hoose and Macayla Sparacino each added a goal while Sparacino and Isabella Hamann chipped in with one assist apiece.
"Both teams played hard and represented their schools with pride and respect," TH coach Patrick McDonald said.
TH outshot the Lady Mountaineers 17-5.
Chatham 3, Hoosic Valley 3 (OT)
CHATHAM -- Chatham and Hoosic Valley played to a 3-3 overtime draw in nonleague varsity girls soccer Friday.
Brooke-Lynn Doyle scored twice for Chatham while Gabby Fisher added a goal and Abby Hoag had two assists.
Samerpreet Kaur snagged 10 saves between the posts for the Lady Panthers.
DELAWARE BOYS SOCCER
Hunter 8, Stamford 0
TANNERSVILLE — Hunter-Tannersville blasted Stamford 8-0 in Delaware League varsity boys soccer on Friday.
“This was a great way to start the season. We were able to take advantage of our two-man advantage as Stamford had to play with nine men. I thought we did a good job sharing the ball and possessing at the end to get the win,” HTC coach Brent Dearing said.
Jason McDevitt scored six goals in the winning effort while Kristian Aizstrauts added two. McDevitt, Aizstrauts, Sebastian Cruz and Dennis Houlihan each picked up an assist. Kaeden Leach and Chris Lagzdins added two assists each.
Lagzdins had six saves in the net for HTC.
The Wildcats (1-0) play at Charlotte Valley on Monday at 4:15 p.m.
Chatham 6, Cairo-Durham 1
CHATHAM — Chatham knocked off Cairo-Durham 6-1 in Patroon Conference varsity tennis on Friday.
The Lady Panthers improve to 5-0 on the season as Cairo-Durham drops to 1-2.

CASTLETON -- Maple Hill continued its hot streak on Friday, beating Taconic Hills 10.5-1.5 to remain unbeaten in Patroon Conference varsity golf.
The Wildcats improve to 4-0 with the win.
John Russell shot a 41 to lead the way and obtained his third qualifying sectional score in the process for MH. Austin Barden added a 45 for his first sectional score and Jeff Huskie shot a season-best 47.
For TH, Madison Bently shot a 42 for a sectional qualifying score.
