Thorsen, Van Alstyne spark Chatham 10-12s
CHATHAM — Matt Thorsen went 4 for 4 with a two-run home run and three doubles and Tate Van Alstyne added a two-run homer to lead Chatham to an 11-3 victory over Catskill in the District 15 10-12-year-old Little League All-Star Baseball Tournament on Wednesday.
Chatham jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Tyler Kneller walked and Thorsen and Cam Horton drilled back-to-back doubles for a 2-0 lead.
Chatham padded its lead in the second when Vinny Marasco walked and Van Alstyne lined a Josh Buffa offering over the fence in center field to make it a 4-0 game.
Thorsen made it 5-0 in the third when he doubled and came around to score on an outfield throwing error.
Chatham scored twice in the fourth. Kneller reached on a dropped third strike and Thorsen followed with a double. Both came in to score on wild pitches.
Catskill got on the board in the fifth with three runs after two were out. Azar Brantley, Buffa and Cullen Fulling all walked to load the bases and John Shook came through with a two-run single. Another run scored when Marco Dodig reached on an infield error.
Chatham dashed any hopes Catskill had of a comeback with four insurance runs in the sixth. With one out, Kneller walked and Thorsen unloaded a two-run bomb that traveled an estimated 275 feet. After Horton walked and Gavin Tanner reached on an error, Jay Balich cracked a two-run double to cap the scoring,
Kneller (5k,3bb,0r,1h), Balich (5k,3bb,3r,1h) and Thorsen (2k,1bb,0r,0h) shared mound duties for Chatham.
Buffa 6k,4bb,7r,5h), Brantley (2k,3bb,3r,1h) and Dodig (1bb,1r,1h) all had a turn on the mound for Catskill.
Both teams return to action on Saturday. Chatham travels to Hudson, while Catskill goes to Saugerties.
