Sweet, Butler honored with 1st weekly awards

HUDSON — The Hudson River Collegiate Baseball League announced its first Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week award winners over the weekend.

Bears first baseman Matt Sweet picked up the first Player of the Week honors for his strong start to the season.

Sweet, a Hudson High graduate and Columbia-Greene Community College commit, is hitting .500 over the course of four games with the Bears.

Sweet has six hits in 12 at-bats, including six doubles and two walks. His batting average is the highest in the league to date.

Taking home Pitcher of the Week honors is Knights’ Joey Butler.

Butler, who plays for the Herkimer Generals, has made two starts already this season and has thrown 16 innings. He currently has a 1.69 ERA, 13 strikeouts and a 2-0 record.

HRCBL play resumes today with the Bears hosting the Knights at the Greenport Town Park at 5:30 p.m.
