To the editor:
On Aug. 8, at the next Full Board Meeting of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors, our elected representatives will elect a candidate for the interim appointment of Coroner through the end of this year.
The position became vacant when Dr. Andrea Cricket Coleman returned to her full time position as a forensic pathologist with the NY City Medical Examiners Office. Dr. Coleman was overwhelmingly elected by Columbia County voters, who saw her as an outstanding and highly qualified candidate.
The County Board of Supervisors has the unique opportunity to appoint another highly qualified candidate — Bernadette Powis. Knowing Bernadette as I do, I have no doubt that she is exactly the right person to serve the people of our county. Not only does she have 35 years of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NPP), her kind and compassionate demeanor will help put families at ease as they deal with the crisis and pain of the death of their loved one at home. I know that she will serve our community with great care, concern and commitment.
So please, let your town or ward supervisor know that the residents of Columbia County deserve to have another medically qualified Coroner, by sending an email or letter. (See your town or city website for the address.)
A resolution will be put forth by the Public Safety Committee — Supervisors Nayer (R-Copake), Weigelt (R-Claverack), Teal (D-New Lebanon), Beaury (R-Germantown), Miah (D-Hudson), Murell (R-Stockport), Cipkowski (D-Hillsdale), and Lagonia (R-Austerlitz) chaired by Supervisor Michael Benvenuto (R-Ghent); followed by a vote at the Full Board of Supervisors meeting.
Both the Public Safety Committee meeting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 8 and the Full Board meeting which follows at 7:30 p.m. are at 401 State St., Hudson, are open to the public. Show up if you possibly can and show how important this is to their constituents — you!
