Sidney S. Castle, 85, a long time Catskill native, passed peacefully on May 25, 2018 in Melbourne, Florida surrounded by loved ones.
Sid was a graduate of Catskill High School and attended the University of Miami, FL, and Siena College. He served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956 as a microwave radio repairman and an Army Reservist from 1956 to 1962 out of Camp Kilmer NJ. Sid began his career at the IBM Corporation in 1956 as a Production Technician. Over the next 36 years he worked at the Kingston, Poughkeepsie and Fishkill loctions until he retired as Senior Engineering Manager in 1992.
Sid was a lifelong learner and an avid student of history, astronomy and autobiographies. His natural curiosity and enthusiasm for reading coupled naturally with his creativity and enjoyment of working with his hands resulting in many hobbies and interests over the years. His interests included golf, skiing, salt dish collecting, stained glass work, photography and dark room work, fly tying and fly fishing, painting, wooden model airplanes and model cars, genealogy, geology and fossils, birdwatching and cooking. Christmas was his favorite holiday and loved collecting unusual Nut Crackers and Christmas tree ornaments reflecting his interests, hobbies, and travels. Sid especially enjoyed research and helping people with their genealogy. He was an active member of the Greene County Historical Society, and volunteered at the New York State Library in Albany, NY. Throughout his life Sid was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill, NY and served on a variety of church and school committees and Boards.
Sidney is survived by his wife Marcia, ten children and many grandchildren . Sid was the beloved only child of Sidney Z. and Catherine (Stauder) Castle. In 1957, Sid married Emily (Maguire) Castle, the daughter of James F. Maguire, and Emily S (Lithgow) until Emily’s death in April 1985. Sid and Emily raised two sons, Joseph S Castle (Roundtop,NY) and James M. Castle (Coxsackie, NY). In November 1985, Sid married Marcia M. Englert creating a large blended family with Marcia’s eight children from a prior marriage (Dr. Paul D Englert) who included Jayne Englert-Burns, Paul D. Englert, Jr., Georgia Stephanie (“Stevie”) Englert-Long, Mark Englert, Phillip Englert, Marcia (“MJ”) (Englert) Walters, Matthew Englert, and Mary (Englert) Johannessen.
Sid and Marcia moved to Melbourne, Florida in March 2014 to enjoy the warmer weather and sunshine. While meeting new friends in Florida, Catskill was never far from Sid’s heart and thoughts as he always considered Catskill home.
A memorial mass service will be held Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 10:00 AM St. Mary’s Church, Mansion Street, Coxsackie NY immediately followed by a graveside service at St Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill, NY.
