GREENPORT — ShopRite is on track to open at its new location at the former Price Chopper on Route 9 by the end of the year, a top company official said.
The pharmacy at ShopRite’s new location at 351 Fairview Ave. opened Oct. 8, but renovations are continuing to move the supermarket into the larger, full-service store by the year’s end. The company had not determined the store’s exact opening date Monday.
Price Chopper shut down its 351 Fairview Ave. store Sept. 15 because of the area’s economic decline, said Mona Golub, Price Chopper’s vice president of public relations and consumer services.
The economic downfall of the store’s location and surrounding area is no longer viable for the future of the company, Golub said Aug. 17.
“ShopRite is committed to keeping the pharmacy open to customers during the renovation and we look forward to moving into a newly renovated supermarket later this year,” Tom Urtz, vice president of operations for ShopRite Supermakerts Inc. said in a statement.
Shortly after Price Chopper’s announcement to close the local store, ShopRite announced it will move its store from 70 Healy Blvd. into the Price Chopper building on Fairview Avenue.
Crews were busy inside the up-and-coming ShopRite on Monday preparing for its grand opening.
“The target time frame for opening the store is still by the end of the year,” ShopRite spokeswoman Karen O’Shea said.
Price Chopper set up shop on Fairview Avenue more than 40 years ago, but started out at a smaller location across the street.
The store employed 22 full-time and 84 part-time workers and was one of the company’s smallest and older stores.
Several Price Chopper employees were offered to continue working at one of Price Chopper’s other locations, but several workers were unable to transfer to other stores because of a lack of transportation or scheduling conflicts. Because of this, ShopRite hired several of Greenport’s part-time employees to work at its new store.
“We have hired several former Price Chopper employees, including the pharmacists who are working now in our pharmacy,” O’Shea said.
O’Shea did not specify the number of Price Chopper employees that will work at ShopRite’s new location.

“We do still have open positions and we encourage people to apply for those positions,” O’Shea said.
