Seven local grapplers win titles at McCabe Invitational

CASTLETON — Seven local wrestlers won championships in their respective weight classes at Saturday’s Joe McCabe Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Maple Hill High School.

Maple Hill’s Trent and Caleb Svingala kept their perfect records intact by winning the 132 and 106 pound weight classes, respectively. Trent defeated Patrick Moore of Watervliet by technical fall, 19-2, while Caleb won a major decision from Peyton White of Watervliet, 11-3, in the finals.

Coxsackie-Athens had three wrestlers bring home titles. Logan Campbell pinned Michael Yelle of Columbia in 1:18 in the 113-pound class, Devon Shader decisioned Brendan Covey of Whitehall/Fort Ann, 5-4, in the 195-pound class and Marc Martinez pinned William Mitcham of Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne in 1:12 to win the 285-pound class.

Another Indians, Dakota Anatriello, made it to the finals in the 220-pound class, but lost by pin to Sterling Spoon of Watervliet in 3:57.

Catskill’s Richard Forbes was the best in the 170-pound class, advancing to the final where he pinned Jacob Gosselin of WhiteHall/Fort Ann in 51 seconds.

Ichabod Crane’s Jair Gomez took the championship in the 99-pound weight class, decisioning Tori Bishop of Tamarac, 11-4, in the final. Gomez’s teammate, Jerald Rhoades, reached a career milestone during the tournament when he recorded his 100th victory.

Coxsackie-Athens finished sixth out of 16 teams in the overall team standings with 155 points. Maple Hill was eighth with 137, Ichabod Crane ninth with 91, Catskill 10th with 69.5, Taconic Hills 13th with 27 and Cairo-Durham 15th with 17.

League action continues on Thursday with Rensselaer at Cairo-Durham, Coxsackie-Athens at Maple Hill and Taconic Hills at Greenville in the Patroon, and Lansingburgh at Ichabod Crane in the Colonial. Berlin travels to Catskill in a non-league match.
