Senior food coupons

July 18, 2018 09:39 am

To the editor:

I had just received a mailing from Senator Amedore — just as I did last year touting the GREENE COUNTY SENIOR FOOD COUPON PROGRAM.

I do not qualify for this program, however I consider it a farce.

There is one coupon worth $20. This is better than nothing.

I support Story’s Farm in Catskill and they have fair prices and good quality, and are very involved in the community.

This $20 cannot provide a week’s worth of fresh food — it is touted as a panacea for better nutrition for Seniors.

I just read the article in today’s paper about SNAP at Farmers Markets. There was a story in yesterday’s New York Times, SNAP will have been cut by 80 percent since President Trump has been in office.

Given the level of poverty in Greene County this will only make it worse.

This will also effect school lunches and breakfasts — this is not a way to improve our nutrition.

Thank you.
