CATSKILL — The Catskill Teachers Association is holding its 6th Annual 5K Run/Walk for a Claus race on Saturday, December 1st. The course starts and ends at Catskill High School. The race begins at 10:30 am, and registration is from 9:00-10:15 a.m.. All pre-registered racers will be given a long sleeve shirt, and most day-of-the-race registrants also receive a shirt until supplies are exhausted. The race course starts at the Catskill High School, goes to Bridge Street, down Main Street to the Point, then back up Main Street to the Rip Van Winkle statue, back to Bridge Street, and then ends at the high school. The top ten male and female runners’ times are recorded and then reported to the Daily Mail. In addition, a trophy is given to the individual with the best holiday attire and another trophy is given for best group attire. The race has had over 100 registered runners each year.
The Catskill Teachers Association sponsors this race in order to raise money for the local food pantries in Catskill. Over the last five years, over $20,000 has been raised and donated to Matthew 25 Food Pantry, Community Action of Greene County and God’s Storehouse. In addition, hundreds of toys have been collected and given to the food pantries for distribution. Runners are asked to donate an unwrapped toy as part of their entry fee. Also, teachers in the district donate to the toy drive.
In addition to raising money through registration fees, the Catskill Teachers Association holds a raffle as part of this event. Over 35 items have been donated to this raffle from businesses in the community and from teachers. The teachers also collected sponsor fees for the race shirts from local businesses. Over 50 businesses and people donated to this cause by being a Major or Minor Sponsor and through raffle donations.
The Catskill Teachers Association would like to thank everyone in the community for making our past 5K Run/Walk a success. We look forward to having another great event this year.
