CATSKILL — Charges are pending against the driver of a vehicle whose passenger, a 90-year-old Leeds woman, died in a three-vehicle accident Tuesday, according to a state police investigator.
The woman was identified as Margaret Edge, who died from multiple trauma injuries as a result of the multiple-vehicle crash that occurred around 3:10 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Route 23 and Cairo Junction Road, state police Senior Investigator Pete Kusminsky said.
An autopsy was performed at Albany Medical Center on Wednesday, according to state police.
Edge was a passenger in a vehicle traveling east on Route 23 being driven by her son, Michael Swenson, 56, of Leeds, when he made a left turn and struck an oncoming vehicle driven by Michael Weinberg, 34, of Windham, Kusminsky said.
Weinberg’s car then struck a third vehicle stopped at a stop sign on Cairo Junction Road, Kusminsky said.
The vehicle at the stop sign was being driven by Merri Schepp, 49, of Cairo, Kusminsky said.
Weinberg was treated at the scene, Schepp was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson and Swenson was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment, Kusmisnky said.
Schepp was treated and released Tuesday and Swenson was released from the hospital Wednesday, according to state police.
“They were treated for non-serious injuries,” Kusminsky said.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation and charges against Swenson are pending, Kusminsky said.
“We are looking into the potential of charging him,” the senior investigator said. It may take two weeks to determine an exact cause, Kusminsky added.
Edge attended the Cairo Lutheran Church on a weekly basis and loved getting together with her friends to play cards, Swenson said, adding he cared for and cooked for his mother, who had arthritis in her hands.
“She went there [to the church] every week, she taught preschool there every week,” Swenson said.
Swenson said has no recollection of the accident and added no funeral arrangements have been made as of Wednesday.
