New York Army National Guard

LATHAM — Justin Westfall, a Valatie resident and veteran of Iraq, has been promoted to master sergeant in the New York Army National Guard.

Westfall was promoted by Col. Steven Rowe, director of the United States Property and Fiscal Office of New York, in a ceremony held at the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs Headquarters.

Westfall, a full-time member of the Army National Guard, has been serving as the senior contracting non-commissioned officer for Joint Force Headquarters New York. In 2000, he enlisted in the New York Army National Guard and completed Basic Training, Advanced Infantry Training, and Heavy Weapons Anti-Armor Infantry Training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

His initial duty assignment was with Company D 1-105th Infantry where he trained abroad in Puerto Rico, England, and Germany before being activated in support of the Sept. 11 attacks.

In 2003, he was assigned to Company D 2-108th Infantry where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II as a 50-Caliber Gunner. In 2006 he transferred to Joint Force Headquarters where he was promoted to sergeant and has excelled in his many diverse assignments within the organization. While in Joint Force Headquarters he acquired the military occupational skills of financial management and army acquisition. He is a Certified General Funds Enterprise Business System trainer and appointed a resource manager for the Department of Logistics.

During numerous New York state emergencies such as Hurricane Irene 2011, Hurricane Sandy 2012, June Floods 2013, Buffalo Snow 2014, he actively supported the State Activity Duty response force, contributing critical expertise to the success of the operations.

His awards include Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement, National Defense Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” Device, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, and Meritorious Unit Commendation.
