HUDSON — “Sauerkraut” Seth Travins presents a jazzy program featuring Julia Gottlieb & the Hudson Standards plus Miss Maybell & the Jazz Age Artistes at Club Helsinki Hudson on Saturday, February 9, at 8 p.m.
Julia Gottlieb is a jazz singer hailing from the Berkshires. Her influences range from Chet Baker to Leonard Cohen. She has performed and recorded in both the LA and NYC jazz scene. Bass player and songwriter “Sauerkraut” Seth Travins has been playing with Julia since the mid-oughts when they collaborated in the Blue Ribbon Boys. They play both originals and interpretations of classic songs. The Hudson Standards are rounded out by pianist Tony Kieraldo and drummer Brian Kantor. The online magazine LA Is the Place wrote, “An eclectic artist and song stylist, Julia’s sound spans generations; think Norah Jones meets Chet Baker.”
Miss Maybell & The Jazz Age Artistes are a group comprised of some of New York City’s best traditional jazz players who came together based on their mutual love of vintage hot jazz, blues, and ragtime music. The trio is comprised of bandleader, vocalist, and washboard player Miss Maybell, violinist Kaia Updike, and pianist Charlie Judkins.
Miss Maybell is a one-of-a-kind contralto singer She recently sang with the award-winning jazz outfit Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. Writing about Miss Maybell & the Jazz Artistes, New Hampshire Magazine said, “Miss Maybell plays banjo and taps her steel brushes on a tricked-out washboard. She also commands an impressive kazoo, but the secret weapon they unleash is Maybell’s vocals - deep and strong enough to join an angel choir with the likes of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday.”
