HUDSON – The Hudson Bluehawks rallied past the Voorheesville Blackbirds, 70-61, in the last game of the regular season on Monday. It was also Senior Night with Hudson's three seniors honored in a ceremony before the game: Spencer Goldstein, Nick Bernockie and Tristen Collins.
Hudson now awaits sectional seedings, which will be announced on Wednesday.
“It’s a big win as we are getting ready for sectionals,” Hudson coach Shawn Briscoe said. “We have the seeding meeting on Wednesday. That’s a quality team from a very quality league.”
It was a back and forth battle between the teams, with Voorheesville leading in the first quarter and briefly in the third quarter. But Hudson was able to respond defensively to take the lead back and earn the victory.
Lavon Fernandez led the team with 25 points, including a three pointer in the third quarter and four free throws in the fourth.
“I think it was a collective (team) effort,” Coach Briscoe said, “Lavon kept us in the game early, in the first half. Dayquan (Griffin) had a nice little stretch in the second half when we were finally able to get the ball down low a little bit. So it was a collective effort.”
Leviticus Johnson followed with 16 points, landing four three-pointers during the game. Johnson had a three in each quarter of the game and also played good defense, forcing a key turn over in the fourth to help lock the game down for Hudson.
Griffin followed with 15 points, scoring seven in the first half and eight in the second with a solid performance. Maurice Smith had an excellent fourth quarter, scoring six of his eight points in that quarter alone. Smith landed four free throws and a field goal to give the Bluehawks some breathing room.
“Our defense stood tall at the end of the game, it’s a nice win and it’s nice for our seniors to give them a win on their senior night.” Coach Briscoe said.
For Voorheesville, Noah Parker led the team with 17 points. Parker had 9 in the first half and 8 in the second. Tanner Tedesco followed with 11 points, knocking down three three-pointers in the game. Joe Saia had ten points for the Blackbirds.
“I think this is only going to help us show that we may have had some bumps in the road, but we are going to be able to compete down the stretch here and hopefully make a little run in the sectionals,” Briscoe said.
