HILLSDALE — One person is dead after a car-motorcycle crash on Route 22 in Hillsdale, police said Friday.
A motorcycle and a Jeep collided around 1:43 p.m. at the Route 22 intersection with County Route 21, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver of the motorcycle, John Cronin Jr., 61, of Ghent was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, police said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the county sheriff’s office and the Sheriff’s Accident/Incident Investigation Unit. County Coroner Michael Blasl is assisting with the investigation.
An initial investigation found the driver of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee, Johanna Carrita, 70, of Castleton-on-Hudson, was driving north on Route 22 when she turned left on County Route 21 and hit the motorcycle, police said.
Carrita was taken to Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, for neck pain, police said. No passengers were in the vehicle.
Route 22 was closed between county Route 7D and Mitchell Street for three hours and was reopened before 5 p.m., according to the Hillsdale Fire Company No. 1.
Community Rescue Squad, Hillsdale Fire Company and the Columbia County Fire Coordinator assisted the sheriff’s office.
Investigating for the sheriff’s office are Lt. Wayne Lopez, Senior Investigator Mark Dunspaugh, Investigator William Dunspaugh, Investigator Ian Boehme, First Sgt. Louis Bray, Deputy Joseph Kilmer, Deputy Peter Merante and Deputy Matthew Leonard.
