CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON — The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) recently awarded the 2017 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Andrew Cucci of Cornwall-on-Hudson. Cucci received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for his volunteer service in the community from FASNY Director Chan Rivera at Storm King Engine Company No. 2 earlier this summer.

“I joined the fire department because I was an explorer and was interested in becoming a first responder,” commented Cucci. While his grandfather and uncle currently serve as firefighters at the same company, the trait has been passed down through Andrew’s family for years, making him a fifth-generation firefighter.

Andrew plans to attend Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass. and will be studying Fire Science. “I hope to become a career firefighter,” he said. Protecting the community is one of Cucci’s core values, and his dedication to continuing to serve shows his strength of character. He has also been a member of the Boy Scouts and has earned Eagle Scout status.

Andrew is one of 20 students chosen for this award. “It is an honor to have been chosen for such a prestigious scholarship,” he expressed.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.
