Edwin Niles Tompkins passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 9 after a six-year battle with prostate cancer.
He is survived by Catherine, his wife of 63 years, four children Wendi (Mike) and Guy (Alana), Shawn (Joseph) and Penny; five grandchildren, Shane (Lisa), Ryan (Talie), Samuel, Clara and Troy; two great-grandchildren, Emma Vance and Cricket and brothers William (Penny), Thomas (MaryAnn), Lynn (Linda).
He is predeceased by his parents Niles and Grace, mother and father-in-law Guitano and Mary Esposito, son-in-law Jeff Martinez, and also numerous beloved brothers and sisters-in-law.
Edwin was born in Medusa, NY on December 7, 1935. He moved to Coxsackie and, later, Athens and recently attended the 65th high school reunion of Coxsackie-Athens Class of 1953.
He was an Air Force Veteran with the Strategic Air Command as a Tailgunner on a B-36. He was a member and past Captain of W.C Brady’s Volunteer Fire Company of Athens.
He was a longtime lector of St. Patrick’s and St Mary’s Catholic Churches. He retired in 2004 from LaFarge Cement Company as the Safety Coordinator and Heavy Equipment Operator. He joyously enjoyed NASCAR, country music, his son’s and grandsons’ stock car and quarter-midget racing days, boating on Lake George, snowmobiling, skiing, and his extensive collection of cowboy boots !
He was forever a family man and devoted and dutiful husband. He spent much of his life enhancing the betterment of his family and community. He laid the foundation for his children and grandchildren to build their futures based on his ideals of hard work, honesty, compassion, respect and above all faith and love.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday September 12 from 4 to 7pm at Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon Street, Athens, N.Y.
