The Decorator at The Theater Barn

September 5, 2018 07:43 pm

NEW LEBANON — The Theater Barn continues their tradition of an early fall production for a 3 week engagement. The Decorator by Donald Churchill is a typical English bedroom farce, a genre the conventions of which include bawdy jokes, lovers in improbable situations, mistaken identity, outrageous coincidences and slamming doors. This wonderful comedy has been called ‘irresistible’ and critics claim that ‘this play will leave you rolling in the aisles.’

Upper-crusty Marcia is having the painters re-do the elegant flat she shares with her husband, Reggie. The painter who comes to finish the job turns out to be Walter, a tradesman who, in the style of a Los Angeles waiter, is really an actor. Who should show up just then but Jane, with whose husband, Brian, Marcia has been having an affair. This can’t be good. Jane announces that she’s found out about Marcia and Brian, and to share her feelings she produces a large mallet and smashes Marcia’s prize hand-painted plates. Jane says she’ll return later to tell Reggie, who’s been out of town on a business trip, about Marcia and Brian.

Director Phil Rice (The Nerd) returns to direct this year’s fall show to conclude the ‘Barn’s 35th Annual Season. He has assembled an excellent cast with returning ‘Barn favorites Kathleen Carey (Veronica’s Room, God of Carnage) and Colleen Lovett (Lucky Me, The Cocktail Hour). New to the ‘Barn, and joining the ladies, is newcomer Mark “Monk” Schane-Lydon who has performed with several regional theaters and is an employee of Simon’s Rock College in Great Barrington.
