GREENPORT — After some delays, the opening of a combination bar-restaurant-movie theater is on track to open Nov. 16.

Cosmic Cinemas, which is under construction at 160 Fairview Ave., the former site of the three-screen Fairview Cinema, was originally expected to open in May, but construction delays pushed the opening back several times.

The new theater franchise boasts sleek tables where moviegoers can enjoy chef-prepared finger-foods and alcoholic beverages while watching the latest films.

The theater also aims to remove distractions commonly found at other cinema franchises, including crying babies. Under Cosmic Cinemas rules, no child under 17 is allowed at any movie unless accompanied by an adult.

The owners are still working with film bookers to determine which films will be shown the first week, Cosmic Chief Operating Officer Kris Keisling said.

“We haven’t quite finalized those [films],” Keisling said. “We are working our hardest to put together something for the opening. If we don’t do something for our initial grand opening, we will have a soft opening and do a grand opening in the winter.”

Cosmic is hiring employees and advertising a range of positions on its website. Cosmic Cinemas will hire a mix of 40 full-time and part-time employees, including ticket-takers, kitchen staff, servers and runners, Cosmic CEO Terrell Braly said in March.

Positions still available on the Cosmic Cinema’s website include bar manager, general manager, dishwasher, runner, servers and kitchen supervisor and staff.

“We’re starting the interview process,” Keisling said Tuesday. “We have a couple of people that will help lead our opening team that will help train everyone.”

Similar to the former Fairview Cinema, the new theater will have three auditoriums. But the total number of seats will be cut by more than half. The old Fairview had about 600 seats in all; Cosmic will have about 275. The theater’s largest auditorium will have 150 seats.

The old Fairview Cinema 3 closed its doors in April 2017 after 44 years in business. The theater’s kitchen is being constructed next door at the former Angela’s Pizza and Pasta, which closed its doors in February.

Greenport’s location will be the first Cosmic Cinema to open nationwide. Other theaters are planned for Albany, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Ashville, North Carolina.

The Fairview Avenue location is the smallest theater in the Cosmic Cinema’s group, with three screens, Braly said in March.

“We’re extremely excited about getting this location up and running, it being the first Cosmic Cinema,” Keisling said. “It has taken a little bit longer, but it will be much better in the long run. With the finished product I think the community will be much happier seeing the final product.”

No single issue was holding up construction, Keisling said.

“If you drive by, you’ll see we have a slew of contractors working hard to wrap things up,” Keisling said. “Obviously, we need to get the proper inspections, etc., and abide by all of the codes.”

The cost of movie tickets will be on par with other movie theaters the area, Keisling said.
