Claverack teen accused of child-sex abuse

GREENPORT — A 16-year-old boy is accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of 11, police said Tuesday.

Michael Burke, 16, of Claverack, was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal sexual act, a class B felony, according to a statement from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Burke is accused of performing oral sex on a child under 11 years old in Greenport on Aug. 26, according to police.

Sheriff’s deputies received a report of child abuse or neglect from the state Child Abuse Hotline about the sexual abuse allegations.

Burke was arraigned in Claverack Town Court and remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond. He was ordered to return to Greenport Town Court at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 21.

Residents who suspect a child is physically or sexually abused or neglected are encouraged to contact the state Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-342-3720, Columbia County Sheriff David Bartlett said. Reports can be made anonymously.
