CATSKILL -- The defending Patroon Conference champion Catskill Cats opened their wrestling season with a 66-18 win over Taconic Hills on Thursday night.

Catskill had multiple pins through the night, in the 138 division with Dan Forbes, 145 with Jesse Davies, 170 with Logan Denniston, 182 from Rich Forbes, 195 with Carson Hotaling, 220 with George Hillenbrand, and 285 from Ian Sutherland.

“Its was a very good win considering our youth, we are starting eight freshman and one 8th grader on the varsity team,” Catskill High School Coach, Richard Mandigo said “This is the youngest team I’ve had since 1996.”

One of the interesting matches from the night was in the 152 weight class between Justin Uvino of Catskill and Ryan Schermerhorn of Taconic Hills. Schermerhorn had the upper-hand in the first period, scoring two from a take down. Schermerhorn had a take down in the second period as well, but Uvino started climbing back with a takedown of his own and a turn, making it 4-3.

It was an intense third round with Uvino scoring five points and Schermerhorn another two. Schermerhorn would not finish the match though, forfeiting it to Uvino because of health complications.

The 285 weight class match between Ian Sutherland and Joshua Hemmings was hard fought, with Hemmings dominating in the first period. Sutherland was able to gaine control and get the pin in the second period, 3:40 into the match.

“We have some skilled wrestlers," Mandigo said. "Richard Forbes, a senior, went to the state qualifiers last year. We have our two captains, Logan Denniston, a very solid junior, and Jesse Davies, who is also very good solid wrestler,”

Taconic Hills' wins came from three forfeits in the 106 weight class with Colin Bracket, the 113 weight class with Camden Boyes and the 120 class with Dylan Mottoshiski. Taconic Hills did have several athletes who grappled well, including Ryan Schermerhorn and Jason Gaylord.

“We are having a very good season considering our youth, we just have to get the younger freshman more experience,” Mandigo said “Hopefully, it will continue as it did today,”
