Candidate for Columbia County Coroner

To the editor:

My name is Bernadette Powis, and I am a candidate for Coroner in this November’s election. I have more than 35 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, Family and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I am deeply committed to community service as a member of the Kinderhook Memorial Library Board of Trustees, the Columbia County Safe at Home Workgroup and as a volunteer with the Summer Lunch Program. My platform during my 2017 campaign for Kinderhook Town Board, called for a local response to the opioid crisis and improved services for the elderly. These are the reasons why I want to serve as Coroner.

First responders, law enforcement and coroners are called to unattended deaths to determine whether that death is natural or suspicious. My long career working on interdisciplinary teams with first responders, law enforcement and others, along with my medical knowledge, skilled observation and reporting expertise, crisis de-escalation ability, and years of experience supporting families facing sorrow and grief, are what I, as Coroner, will bring to this team.

My opponent in this race is Carmen Martino recently retired from a 23 year career in law enforcement. I commend him for his accomplished law enforcement resume. However, death scenes are already well represented by our highly skilled and professional representatives of law enforcement: the Sheriff’s Department and the State Police. The coroner’s position, independent of law enforcement, equal in importance, is best served by medical expertise and sensitivity.

Columbia County voters, please vote for me in November.

Bernadette M. Powis RN, FNP, NPP
