Cairo-Durham Middle School student Kaylan Rennig was announced the winner of the national Scholastic Storyworks Magazine Create-A-Character contest. Her character was hand-picked from more than 1,000 entries and will appear in a story published in the May/June 2019 issue of Storyworks Magazine. The character, Veronica, was based on Rennig’s experiences visiting her grandparents’ cabin in Pennsylvania, where she enjoys seeing all different types of wildlife. While creating Veronica, Rennig said she wanted to incorporate her experiences as well as the real-world problem of preserving the environment. Kaylan Rennig is pictured in the middle with Erin Murphy, English teacher; Mike Mitchell, principal; and Donna Howell, English teacher.
