CAIRO — The Coxsackie-Athens 8-10-year-old Little League All-Star baseball team used a 10-run first inning to capture an 11-1 victory in four innings over Cairo-Durham in Triple A action Wednesday.
Coxsackie-Athens opened the bottom of the first inning with singles from Rich Perino and Tj Shutter, and Joe Perino followed it up with a line drive single to third base. However, Cairo-Durham made the heads-up play by throwing home to catch Rich Perino attempting to score from third.
Coxsackie-Athens poured it on after that, though, using plate discipline to reach base safely on three walks and three hit by pitches. The walks helped load the bases and give Coxsackie an early 5-0 lead. They expanded it to 7-0 with a Rich Perino two-run single to centerfield.
Coxsackie-Athens capped off its scoring with a two-run single to left field by Joe Perino to make it 10-0.
With ace Shutter on the hill, Coxsackie-Athens held Cairo-Durham hitless in the two innings he was on the hill. He walked two while punching out six batters. Joe Perino came in for two innings of relief and surrendered one run off one hit while walking four and fanning four.
Cairo-Durham’s lone hit and run came off an RBI single to right field by Michael Maynard, who drove in Jacob Wagoner from third.
Coxsackie-Athens tallied its 11th run in the third inning off a passed ball, allowing Rich Perino to score.
Joe Perino stepped onto the hill in the fourth and shut Cairo-Durham down to give Coxsackie-Athens.
Rich Perino led the Coxsackie offense, going 3 for 3 with three singles and two RBI. Joe Perino added two singles and two RBI and Shutter added two singles.
For Cairo-Durham, Maynard led the way with a single and an RBI.
