Pioneer employees build beds for Capital Region children in need

More than 60 staff members joined with Sleep in Heavenly Peace of Mechanicville, a nonprofit agency that builds, assembles and delivers beds to vulnerable children and families.

ALBANY — Pioneer Bancorp Inc., a leading financial institution in New York’s Capital Region, today mobilized dozens of employees for a first-of-its-kind community service project designed to help local children and families in need. Trading computers for power tools, more than 60 Pioneer team members built new beds that will be provided to children in the Capital Region who are without one of their own.

Working in the parking lot of Pioneer’s headquarters on Albany Shaker Road in Colonie, employees spent April 19 constructing approximately 40 new beds. The project was undertaken in partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace of Mechanicville, a nonprofit agency that builds, assembles and delivers beds to children in need.

In further supporting the effort, Pioneer employees donated a variety of bedding supplies – nearly 200 items including pillows, pillowcases, sheets, and comforters – which were presented to the organization along with the beds. Delivery was made on April 20.

“To know that through the efforts of our employees, dozens of local children will sleep in their own beds this weekend is both humbling and gratifying,” said Tom Amell, President and CEO of Pioneer. “I’m so proud of our team for their passion in supporting the Pioneer Charitable Foundation’s mission of ‘Helping Kids be Kids,’ and their commitment to building on Pioneer’s 135-year history of helping our neighbors in need.”

The Pioneer Charitable Foundation, founded in 2018 with a mission of “Helping Kids be Kids,” has surpassed $1.6 million in giving over its first 5 years.

That includes providing vital funding to more than 400 local nonprofits that offer housing, nutrition and health care services, along with educational, social and recreational programs, to assist vulnerable children in the Capital Region.

Just as importantly, Pioneer employees routinely donate their time – more than 16,000 volunteer hours over the past 5 years – to extend the Foundation’s reach and impact.

That includes signature events like Pioneer’s Grand Carnival and Mini-Golf Tournament, and numerous events, activities and initiatives throughout the year, from community service work to quarterly giving drives.
